Thank you for writing this! I’ve been meaning to learn morse code for years and years. This app makes me think I’ll finally manage it! Coming from a programming and user interface design background, my feedback is below. Please don’t be bothered that there’s a lot. You’ve done such a good job with this program that my imagination sorta went wild.

-Use levels where the difficulty increases in a sawtooth pattern, up, down, up, down, up,down. Introduce some characters at the start of the level then ask the user to use them at a faster pace. In the next level, introduce some new characters at a slow pace then challenge the player to use them at a faster pace. As it’s written now, I’ve gotten really good at E, T, I, and A. Then things go nuts and it’s too much all at once, I lose and go back to doing ETIA again and again.

-And yeah, I’d love it if I could start my next game at a higher level, where the easy characters have already been introduced.

-I’m having a hard time with dashes, especially aiming them. The game seems to want very long dashes for one. And after the first couple dashes, the bomb has moved and my third dash misses.

-The D looks a lot like the O. Especially on the tank flag for some reason.

-Overlapping bombs are very difficult. Some of the taps hit the front one, some hit the back. I recommend adding some code to avoid overlapping bombs most of the time.

-Maybe there could be a non-moving code key that I could enter stuff into and the lowest matching bomb would go off?

-The crates seem unpredictable. I got some crates that paused the single bomb on screen. And I swear I got one crate that made the letters on screen More difficult?

-Maybe a listening exercise? The game beeps out a … and the player finds and taps the S bomb?

-On hard, you could hide the codes, making the user work from memory or perish.

Thank you again for writing this and releasing it for me to play with. I’ve had a lot of fun already.

    Tom,

First, I really appreciate your invaluable feedback.

-> I see. As you pointed out, we actually added more characters to Level1 for demo purpose. The full version will have balanced difficulties.

-And yeah, I’d love it if I could start my next game at a higher level, where the easy characters have already been introduced.

-> More complex chars/numbers will be introduced as the level goes up. We choose a code between the easiest code (.) and the newly introduced complex code.

-I’m having a hard time with dashes, especially aiming them. The game seems to want very long dashes for one. And after the first couple dashes, the bomb has moved and my third dash misses.

-> Once you get used to it you can even enter 5 dahs (- – - – -) while the bomb waves. So make the most use of Practice (Training) session. :)

-The D looks a lot like the O. Especially on the tank flag for some reason.

-> We will update the font. Thanks.

-Overlapping bombs are very difficult. Some of the taps hit the front one, some hit the back. I recommend adding some code to avoid overlapping bombs most of the time.

-> A logic is being used to avoid overlapping bombs when the boss fires. However, due to different speeds and movements, it is not that easy to avoid such overlapped bombs. We will think over other ways to avoid such incidents.

-Maybe there could be a non-moving code key that I could enter stuff into and the lowest matching bomb would go off?

-> This was the original idea. Then we decided to change to enter the code directly to the bomb to make use of iPhone/iPod Touch’s touch feature. We will keep this in mind for future improvements.

-The crates seem unpredictable. I got some crates that paused the single bomb on screen. And I swear I got one crate that made the letters on screen More difficult?

-> If you look at them carefully, you will find they are different. The broken crate will give either a good or bad item. But the chance for the good item is bigger.

-Maybe a listening exercise? The game beeps out a … and the player finds and taps the S bomb?

-> We may use it for a bonus game between levels.

-On hard, you could hide the codes, making the user work from memory or perish.

-> There are lots of different difficulties as the level goes up. Blinking/hiding the codes are parts of them. Good catch! :)

Thank you again for your time and feedback.

Would you also write your feedback for the application on iTunes?

BTW, do you mind if we contact you for the beta testing of the full version in the near future?

Dunno if you got my email. Yes, I’m interested in beta testing. I just got the new release and I’m having a much easier time. :) Excellent work!

After one game, I’m noticing that the letter on the tank flag doesn’t have enough contrast to stand out. I actually find myself just reading dots and dashes when things get going fast because they stand out better on the shells too.

There was one time that I had a shell about as far left as it could be and I simply could not tap on it. It kept giving me the missed tap noise.

I’d make the special event text much bigger, center screen and probably behind the bullets. The same way Mortal Kombat would fill the screen up with “Fatality”.

You’re saving the rest of the alphabet for the full release I’m guessing?

The disappearing dots were cool and I really liked the way that the shield would stay up and actually increase charge with the right power up.

    Nice revision

    Hi Tom,

Sorry for the late reply. I was on vacation last week.

Dunno if you got my email. Yes, I’m interested in beta testing. I just got the new release and I’m having a much easier time.

I got your email. We’re still working on the full version of Morse. It’s expected to be completed within 2-3 weeks. Please, provide your iPhone/iPod Touch’s Identifier so that we can build an ad hoc distribution for you.

After one game, I’m noticing that the letter on the tank flag doesn’t have enough contrast to stand out. I actually find myself just reading dots and dashes when things get going fast because they stand out better on the shells too.

We will update the font and color of the letters for the full version.

There was one time that I had a shell about as far left as it could be and I simply could not tap on it. It kept giving me the missed tap noise.

If the bomb was in Wave movement, it can go outside the screen, but will show up on screen again. If it’s not the case, it must be a bug in checking the bomb position. A bomb can be positioned at about 15 pixels apart from left and right boundaries.

I’d make the special event text much bigger, center screen and probably behind the bullets. The same way Mortal Kombat would fill the screen up with “Fatality”.

Good point! Will make the acquired item name display bigger and more enjoyable(?).

You’re saving the rest of the alphabet for the full release I’m guessing?

Yes, there are many variations of bomb types, movements and difficulties as the level goes up.

Thanks again for your time and invaluable feedback. We appreciate it very much. :)
